HEALTH & WELLNESS
Your baby’s first medical check-up:
What goes on during the medical check-up?
The doctor or pediatrician will ask you questions about your baby in general, her eating habits and sleeping schedules, as well as about her development and behavior. The pediatrician will also perform a physical check-up to include weight, sight and hearing, and will perform a blood-test.
DON´T FORGET!
Always carry with you your baby’s immunization records to every medical check-up. This is very important!
DAILY CARE
Your baby’s feeding:
Newborn babies should only have breast milk, formula and/or water. Ask your doctor, so she can help you decide what is best for you and your family.
Breast feeding
Breastfeeding is a nutritious, healthy and affordable way to feed your baby.
Bottle feeding
If you feed your baby with formula in a bottle, discuss with your pediatrician the need to feed her an iron-enriched formula. You could also use a breast pump to extract your breast milk and feed it to her in a bottle. This way, your husband or partner can also help to share the nurturing experience of feeding your baby.
DON´T FORGET!
Burping makes your baby more comfortable because she eliminates air from her belly.
Your baby's bath:
Giving your baby a sponge or full bath:
Start with her eyes, using a wet cotton ball, and gently clean around her eyes.
-
Use a towel and mild soap to wash her face, making sure to avoid the eye area.
-
Clean around her ears, but not inside them.
-
Wash her neck, chest, arms, legs and her skin folds.
-
Finally, clean the genital area and then her buttocks.
-
Dry her softly and completely with a clean towel.
LEARNING & GROWING
How can you help your baby when he cries?
When you wish to soothe your baby:
-
Rock him in your arms or on a rocking chair.
-
Whisper to him or make cooing sounds, so he will know you are close.
-
Sing to him or play soft music.
-
Wrap him in a light blanket (but make sure he doesn't overheat).
DON´T FORGET!
Change your baby’s diapers frequently in order to prevent skin irritations caused by diaper rash. You will need a clean diaper and a wet soft towel.
WARNING!
Do not use talcum powder to prevent the baby from inhaling it.
