Simple tips to make exercise a family affair

It’s more fun to exercise together

You may find it a bit uphill to exercise daily, as experts recommend for keeping yourself in good health. If you aren’t used to exercising, practicing a sport on your own may not be your ideal of a fun evening, but if you enlist your family to join in with you in a fun activity, the idea of exercising may be a lot more attractive.  

Exercising with your family does not mean jogging together (although it is a possibility), but coming up with an activity that both kids and adults can practice and that is fun for all. Having fun is the key, because if it becomes a chore, they will soon lose interest.

Choose a moment of the day in which you are all together and during which you can spend an hour or 45 minutes doing something pleasant.  

 

Some ideas

Making fun a priority, think of the things that your kids would enjoy doing and that is within your reach. For example:

  • Walking in the park, finding new paths and routs every day.
  • Bike riding. Bike paths are great for this.
  • Playing soccer or some other ball game in the park or your backyard.  
  • Playing Frisbee, badminton, ping-pong or other similar games which involve running. Following are other suggestions for rainy or cold days:
  • Take a brisk walk around the mall, and see who arrives at a certain point faster.
  • Go up and down stairs and turn it into a fun game.
  • Dance to fast music at home.  

 

Your goal is to have fun.

Try to give each of these activities a fun and exciting flair. If you are going to take a stroll in the park, you can start a leaf or a stone or rock collection. You could also watch an ant-hill, a bird next or any other natural event.

If you go on bike rides, carry a snack so you can stop for a picnic at your destination, or explore different routes every day. Kids love this kind of outdoor adventures and if you are able to get them interested, they will be the ones insisting that you all go out daily to get your exercise.

Besides exercising, take advantage of these occasions to forget your problems and just be there for your kids. Put your worries to one side and enjoy these family moments. Besides being good for your figure, they will do wonders for your emotions too.
